Most builders, architects and flooring professionals agree that solid hardwoods like oak, ash, maple and cherry add beauty to a home. In addition, unfinished floors allow the homeowner a greater variety of finishes to complement their room decor.

For the do-it yourself homeowner, unfinished hardwoods have a lower material cost than prefinished flooring. However, additional time must be considered for the sanding and finishing, which results in the area being inaccessible for a few days. When purchasing unfinished flooring, add an additional quantity of 10% to allow for cutting waste. Unfinished Strip

Strip flooring is available in both 1 ½” and 2 ¼” widths. The most common strip is a 2 ¼” width. Strip is sold by the bundle, with each bundle containing the same width. However, strip can be installed in random widths which would require ordering multiple bundles, each of different widths. All listed unfinished hardwoods are 3/4" thick, tongue and grooved, and end matched.

Unfinished Plank

The most common plank is a 3” width. However, planks are also available in individual bundles of 3¼”, 4”, 5”, 6” and 7” widths. Plank flooring can be installed in random widths, with the most popular combination being 3”, 5” and 7” widths. Installation of plank in random widths would require ordering multiple bundles, each of different widths. All listed unfinished hardwoods are 3/4" thick, tongue and grooved, and end matched.

Unfinished Custom Flooring

Single slats or "shorts" are strip flooring in customized lengths to create squares or patterns known as parquet flooring.  You can design borders and/or medallions around your strip or plank floors.  Some special designs can be created by using any species or combination of species you desire.
